JOHN DOTY was born 4 June 1709
in Piscataway or Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey.

He is the son of SAMUEL DOTY and ELIZABETH HULL.

OCIE SKILLMAN was born 1730 in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey.

She is the daughter of JAN SKILLMAN and ANNA HULL.

It is believed that John and Ocie lived in Somerset County, New Jersey for their entire lives.

John Doty was married twice.   His first wife is Unknown.   She died childless, or possibly in childbirth.

John and Ocie were married in 1732 in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey.

Born in 1733
in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey

Samuel married KETURAH (UNKNOWN) in 1764.

Samuel died in 1817 in Warren County, Ohio.

2.  CORNELIUS DOTY

Born in Dec 1736 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

He married ANNE HARMON.

Cornelius died in Western Oneida County, New York in 1810.

3.  JOHN DOTY

Born in 1738 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

It is reported that one of John Doty's sons died
fighting with his father in 1757.
It may possibly have been this son, John.

4.  SARAH DOTY

Born in 1740 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

5.  OCIE DOTY

Born in 1742 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

6.  ELIZABETH DOTY

Born in 1742 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Elizabeth is possibly a twin to Ocie.

7.  THOMAS DOTY

Born in 1746 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

Thomas married SARAH SKILLMAN.
Thomas and Sarah were first cousins.
They moved to Kentucky in 1805.

8.  ANN DOTY

Born probably in 1748 in Somerset County, New Jersey.

She possibly married BENJAMIN LEWIS on 11 Feb 1768.

9.  LEVI DOTY

Born in 1752 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

10.  SKILLMAN DOTY

Born 17 Oct 1755 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

He married HANNAH HAYDEN in 1781.

Skillman died in 1840 in Romulus, New York.

11.  WILLIAM DOTY

Born in 1756 in probably Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

He died 21 Sept 1779 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey
at the age of 23 years.

He is buried in the cemetery at Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

There have been no church records located as yet.

There is no known information.

John died on 9 Nov 1757 near the Delaware River.  He was killed by Indians.

The date and place of Ocie's death is unknown.

John Doty was a very civic minded man, interested in and active in all areas of government.  He was intelligent and enterprising.  His children were well educated and followed in their father's manner of thinking.

Among some papers of James Alexander (Lord Stirling) now in the New Jersey Historical Society of Newark, New Jersey, there is a lease for 24 March 1739 from James Alexander to John Doty of Basking Ridge, N.J. for 800 acres there.  The lease was up for renewal on 24 July 1746 when notice was served, and John signed the new lease 28 Feb 1747.

John met an untimely death in the prime of life when he was killed by the Indians in one of the Indian wars near the Delaware River in 1757.  His widow continued to raise their large family in the tradition started at their birth.  They were all useful citizens of their society of the day.

It is reported that Ocie Skillman is of Dutch origin.
