Family Background

GODFREY M. ISAACS and SARAH E. SMITH are my husband's
Paternal Great-Grandparents.

Their daughter, SARAH E. ISAACS, is my husband's Grandmother.

Births

GODFREY M. ISAACS was born in
Madison County, Kentucky on 16 February 1841.

He is the son of JOHN ISAACS
and ISABELLA MOORE.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

SARAH ELIZABETH SMITH was born in Tennessee
on 23 February 1864 or 1867.

She is the daughter of JAMES O. SMITH.

Her mother's name is still unknown.

I believe that he moved to Texas County, Missouri after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, sometime between 1882-1883.  It was in Missouri that he met his second wife, Sarah.

Godfrey owned a farm in Texas County, Missouri.  It's uncertain as to whether the farm was sold or not.  When the 1900 Federal Census was taken, they were still living in Texas County.  Godfrey's daughter, Edith Rachel was born in Wayne County in 1901.

It is hard for me to imagine the terrible heartaches these people must have suffered from losing so many babies, some right after the other.  It must have been quite a hardship on Godfrey to lose his wife while he still had 5 young children to take of by himself.

Religion

Family tradition relates that Godfrey was a very devout Baptist.

All his children's names and dates of birth were written in his Bible.  The only picture of him that I've ever been able to locate is one in which he was holding his Bible.

Military

Godfrey was 20 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army of the Civil War on 19 August 1861 at Boonville, Kentucky in the Infantry.  He served for 3 years.

He fought in three battles which were located at:

(1) Chickasaw Bluff, Mississippi on December 26-29, 1862
(2) Harrison Hill on 1 May 1863
(3)Champion Hills, Mississippi on 20 May 1863.

His military records state that he was taken prisoner in 1863.

He was discharged 12 October 1864 at Indianapolis, Indiana.

His records also state that he received a pension for $12.00 every month.  After he died, Sarah was able to receive it.

Deaths

Godfrey died 16 January 1911 in Liberty Township, Stoddard County, Missouri at the age of 69 years.

He had suffered a broken leg and died from pneumonia.  He is buried in the Bernie Cemetery.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Sarah died 2 February 1940 at McDougal, Clay County, Arkansas at the age of 75 years.

She is buried in the Bernie Cemetery, Stoddard County, Missouri next to her first husband, Godfrey, under the name of Sarah "Isaacs."
