| Other Information |
There is a silver shield, the oldest one known and is in great condition, that is held by the Gilde St. Jan (i.e. the St. John's Guild) in Leenderstrijp, dated 1644 that was awarded to Ariaen Henrici Maes. He was declared "Koning (king) van het St. Jan's Gilde." This was and is considered a temporary title for the man that wins the annual shooting contest.Ariaen was a Beer Brewer, Farmer, and Council Member on behalf of Leende in de "heerlijkheid" Heeze-Leende. Three guilds are still in existence today.
There is a lot of written history by the guilds starting in the early 1500's. To get an idea what the days were like, for example in 1637-1639 there were many battles with Germans and Kroats fighting for the Austrian army. The Kroats especially were vicious and terrorized the area of Heeze-Leende.
In 1637 in Leende, 366 inhabitants died of the plague. After 1639 it settled down, but only until 1648 when the 80 year war broke out. The protestant Dutch and Gelders (from Arnhem) plundered and placed heavy tax burdens on the local people. This was common during the entire 1500's, 1600's, and 1700's.
There are several records of battles and they involved the local guilds. Not much has been won since 1648.
